Should IrfanView fully support TWAIN drivers (adjustments work with GIMP and Word but not IV)? So with that as a pre-amble, my questions are: I picked up the idea someplace that some of the Nikon scanner adjustments are in the EXIF data, and that might explain why there is a difference between adjusting contrast or not (or rather, why there is no difference when adjustments have been made).

I used to use an HP PhotoSmart S-10 slide scanner with IrfanView (albeit an earlier version of IV) and that could adjust colour and contrast OK. If I use another TWAIN supporting program (GIMP or Word) it works fine.

If I use the Nikon software stand-alone, it works fine. Interestingly, if I rotate the image in the Nikon software, I get a warning message (when I hit scan) saying not all TWAIN application supports rotate and then IrfanView crashes with a program error. When I adjust colour curves or gamma or the grey point or other things that have a histogram, they appear in the Nikon Preview Window OK but don't make it to the IrfanView image (and not in the file either of course). Specifically I can crop, adjust resolution dpi, adjust analog gain, adjust focus, and invoke digital ICE. It's the same for both batch and single scan. The scanner software has some quite powerful options for adjusting the image, but not all of the adjustments I make appear in the final image.

Buy VueScan (cheap at the price) and finish your TIFFs in a secondary image processing package (like iPhoto, Aperture, etc).Īccessibility (29) Android (7) Aperture (117) app.I have IV 4.27 working with my Nikon LS-2000 slide scanner with Nikon Scan 3.1 software on an XP SP2 system. If you're using a Nikon Cool Scan (CoolScan) with OS X, don't bother installing the ugly Nikon software.

Next I tried VueScan, which has full Intel support, on my dual core MacBook. The processing was a bit slow, but the workflow was great. From Aperture I exported high res JPEGs to store in iPhoto (note Aperture doesn't allow date editing, an incomprehensible defect). I didn't fuss too much with white balance or levels, I went with the very good initial results then dropped the 24bit TIFF into Aperture for finishing. Results were better than what I got with Nikon Scan. I then tried the same images on the G5 using the latest version of VueScan. Performance on a G5 iMac was dog slow and, really, it was clumsy. I got the best results turning everything off, working with the clumsy levels tool, and using Digital ICE for damaged slides. It was slow however, and I wasn't impressed with the results various image adjustment options. It's a quirky mix of various semi-integrated packages that Nikon resells, but it mostly worked.

I installed as admin, but the app works for a non-admin user). I started out using Nikon Scan 4.02, downloading the latest OS X version from Nikon's support site (yechy non-Apple installer btw. I used Nikon CoolScan V I bought about 3-4 years ago, it's oddly still about state of the art for slide scanning (though slow now). These range from about 40 to 50 years old, in various states of repair.

I've mostly used VueScan to do print and a few negative scans, but recently I worked on a set of my mother's slides. I bought a "pro" license, so I get my updates as long as Hanrick toils away. The author's personal focus and prolonged dedication has produced an idiosyncratic product that, with a few quirks (auto-crop isn't what it could be) performs admirably well. I've published a few posts about VueScan it's a well regarded cross-platform scan control software package that appears to be a one person show.
